The Protein Market
The market for biopharmaceuticals has witnessed a transformation because recombinant proteins and other biological products have become a significant part of the global pharmeceutical market and diagnosis, as well as the center of the research of many companies.
Biopharmaceutical productsare becoming more and more relevant. At present, over one quarter of the requests approved for marketing by the FDA and 42% of the preclinical trials are biopharmaceutical products (Nature Biotechnology No. 12 December 2007). As reported by Datamonitor, the market size of organic products worldwide increase from 56,100 million ESD in 2004 105,200 USD on 2010, a compound annual growth of 11,1%.
Therapeutic proteins resulted in sales of 40,000 million USD in 2006, with a growth of 20% between 2001 and 2006. By contrast, the pharmaceutical market in the U.S. only experienced an annual growth of 6-8%. It is thus clear that a spectacular growth is being experienced in the implementation and use of the therapeutic proteins in the global market.
