The decclaration was confirmed last December 26, with the publication of the Spanish State Budget 2014, which established that the commemoration of the Year of Biotechnology will enjoy the status of “exceptional public interest”. It is therefore a decisive boost vor a sector that ist destined to play a central role in the Spanish economy, according to the promoter entities. Also, the budget set tax benefits for the events of the commemoration, with exemptions for individuals and companies participating in the activities of the Year of Biotechnology.
The commemoration of 2014 as Spanish Year of Biotechnology is an initiative born in the Spanish Federation of Biotechnologists (FEBiotec), with the support of ASEBIO (Association of Biotech Industries); SEBiot (Spanish Society of Biotechnology), which in 2014 celebrates its 25th anniversary, and SEM (Spanish Society for Microbiology). In the words of its promoters, the aim of the Year of Biotechnology is “to further promote the Spanish biotechnology in all its areas, research and industry, and to improve their education and social communication. It is, in short, put Biotechnology in the center of society.”
